Florida Coyotes

I have been fortunate enough to see and photograph 3 different coyotes in Central Florida over the last 8 months. It had never occurred to me that coyotes would be somewhat easy to find here. It’s not like I went out looking for them, but in each case, they found me. What is even more amazing is that 2 of these coyotes were in urban environments and seemingly thriving.

Here are a few images of the coyotes I’ve seen here. This first one is of a coyote that found me in Lake County, FL. Click an image for a larger view.

My next encounter was at the Lyonia Preserve in Deltona, FL.

Finally, I was able to photograph this coyote at the Greenwood Cemetery in Orlando, FL. This female looked pretty small and scrawny. I’m not sure if that’s normal for a female or if there just isn’t that much to eat in the cemetery.

I guess next I need to go find some Florida bears and Florida panthers. I know we have black bears here. In fact they are commonly seen not far from where I live. The panther, however, is another story. As an endangered species, there are less than 100 left in the wild. Hopefully I’ll be as lucky as my fellow photographer Heather Green. She found these panthers not too long ago in South Florida.

  9. Lake County CoyoteWow – I’ve been there quite a bit and always on the lookout – but to no avail! So I’m happy to see one via Michael Proxy!
Cool! And Philip – as I said – never saw him even once!

  27. Lake County CoyoteVery cool shot!
I know how you and your wife felt…. Tom once spotted a "wolf" on the road on the way up to Brighton Ski Resort in Utah once. Needless to say, we discovered it was a coyote after he got me all excited about seeing a "wolf".
Those impromptu shots are always the best.

  35. Florida Coyote - Lyonia Preserve, DeltonaWow, that’s a dark one!
Beautiful to spot and great shot!

  36. Florida Coyote - Lyonia Preserve, Deltonathis is just STUNNING!!!!! The color of his coat, the fantastic light on the eyes…amazing shot!!!!

  37. Florida Coyote - Lyonia Preserve, DeltonaWhat a beautiful animal. I’ve never seen one that dark.

  38. Florida Coyote - Lyonia Preserve, DeltonaWow, hard to believe that beautiful beast is just around the corner from me. Heather is right, the light on the eyes is awesome. Great capture.

  39. Florida Coyote - Lyonia Preserve, DeltonaThat’s amazing. Really stunning but it almost looks crossed with something else. Do they come that dark?

  40. Florida Coyote - Lyonia Preserve, DeltonaSuper, he almost looks more like a wolf than a coyote. What a haunting stare.

Seen on your photo stream. ( ?² )

  41. Florida Coyote - Lyonia Preserve, DeltonaWow! What a find. He’s gorgeous. Love the eyes.

  42. Florida Coyote - Lyonia Preserve, DeltonaI wonder if this a hybrid. It looks like it has domestic dog qualities…. Being near "suburbia" as you put it, I would bet it is. Beautiful animal, and an excellent capture.

  43. Florida Coyote - Lyonia Preserve, DeltonaWhoa… I’ve never seen one this dark !
I’m curious to know more about it.

  44. Florida Coyote - Lyonia Preserve, DeltonaWhoa!!!!!!! Gorgeous animal!!! You have been very successful in your photography outings the last year…hope 2011 continues that for you. :)

  45. Florida Coyote - Lyonia Preserve, DeltonaI see that some of you think this might be a cross between a dog and a coyote. Definitely a possibility, but I did confirm the defining characteristics of a coyote. They include yellow eyes, sharp pointed ears, and a bushy tail with a black tip. The black tip is difficult to see in this image, but dogs do not share any of these characteristics. I also checked on the possibility of a this being a wolf, but the Red Wolf has been extinct in Florida since 1985.

A coyote has recently been spotted in the Greenwood cemetery in downtown Orlando, so an urban coyote is not out of the question. Perhaps someone with more experience with canines could weigh in with an expert opinion.

  46. Florida Coyote - Lyonia Preserve, DeltonaWow! I didn’t know we had anything like that here! It’s a little scary looking, but nice find and shot!

  47. Florida Coyote - Lyonia Preserve, DeltonaAwesome find Michael, I hike there often…Great image..

  48. Florida Coyote - Lyonia Preserve, DeltonaWOW Michael…love it

  49. Florida Coyote - Lyonia Preserve, DeltonaThe ability of dogs and wild coyotes or wild coyotes and wolves to cross breed isn’t impossible, but it is unlikely. Let’s just say they have a communication problem. At any rate it’s a beautiful canine..

  50. Florida Coyote - Lyonia Preserve, DeltonaLooks like my neighbor’s dog. LOL. Great capture, Mike!

  51. Florida Coyote - Lyonia Preserve, DeltonaNow that is very cool….AWESOME find and capture Michael !!!

  52. Florida Coyote - Lyonia Preserve, DeltonaBeautiful animal… probably on the prowl for a cat :)

  53. Florida Coyote - Lyonia Preserve, DeltonaOh they definitely can thrive in suburban and urban areas. Routinely seen out by Ocoee and Windermere. Lets hope he is hunting feral cats and not pets!!

  54. Florida Coyote - Lyonia Preserve, DeltonaAmazing find Mike. The eyes are glowing. Really, really cool!

  55. Florida Coyote - Lyonia Preserve, DeltonaThat’s a coyote? Looks more like a wolf!

Tell us the truth, Michael, you shot this at a zoo!

  56. Florida Coyote - Lyonia Preserve, DeltonaWow!! What a great shot!! Love those eyes!!!

  57. Florida Coyote - Lyonia Preserve, DeltonaGreat find Michael
Interesting colour variation, in the shadows you might be forgiven for thinking it was a panther :0)

  58. Florida Coyote - Lyonia Preserve, DeltonaWow….this is a real find….and a bit of a mystery too! I never knew they could be dark like that! Also….all the coyotes I have seen are quite lean and scruffy looking. Scary to think what this one might be eating! The eyes are amazing….I think I would have run the other way….looks kinda scary…..lol Fantastic spot and image! If you took this in Australia you could call it a Dingo!!!

  59. Florida Coyote - Lyonia Preserve, Deltona"The Dingo ate my baby!!!!" :-)

  60. Florida Coyote - Lyonia Preserve, Deltona[http://www.flickr.com/photos/kevin_barry] No zoo, but I’ve split my side laughing over your dingo comment.

  61. Florida Coyote - Lyonia Preserve, DeltonaWhoa!!! Amazing find and very nice shot. I read the story on you blog and this photo is all the more impressive given that it didn’t hang out more than a few seconds.

  85. Urban Coyote - Orlando, FLThanks for posting these despite the challenging light. I would have never guessed there were coyotes in Florida…but of course they are highly adaptable urban animals, so why not. Great shots …I love the close proximity and eye contact. The coyotes here aren’t as accommodating as most of my shots of them are either from a mile away or butt shots of them running away.
