I have been fortunate enough to see and photograph 3 different coyotes in Central Florida over the last 8 months. It had never occurred to me that coyotes would be somewhat easy to find here. It’s not like I went out looking for them, but in each case, they found me. What is even more amazing is that 2 of these coyotes were in urban environments and seemingly thriving.
Here are a few images of the coyotes I’ve seen here. This first one is of a coyote that found me in Lake County, FL. Click an image for a larger view.
My next encounter was at the Lyonia Preserve in Deltona, FL.
Finally, I was able to photograph this coyote at the Greenwood Cemetery in Orlando, FL. This female looked pretty small and scrawny. I’m not sure if that’s normal for a female or if there just isn’t that much to eat in the cemetery.
I guess next I need to go find some Florida bears and Florida panthers. I know we have black bears here. In fact they are commonly seen not far from where I live. The panther, however, is another story. As an endangered species, there are less than 100 left in the wild. Hopefully I’ll be as lucky as my fellow photographer Heather Green. She found these panthers not too long ago in South Florida.
